NEW HORIZON CHURCH SELECTS WORXAUDIO TECHNOLOGIES
TrueLine Series loudspeakers focus of upgraded SR system

Durham, NC – February 2008… After suffering for roughly two years with the problematic performance of their original SR (sound reinforcement) system, management at New Horizon Church decided enough was enough and that the time had come to atone for the system’s sonic deficiencies. After a protracted search for the right contractor to handle the project, New Horizon placed their trust in Burlington, NC-based Boone Audio, Incorporated and ultimately selected a new system consisting of products from the WorxAudio Technologies TrueLine catalog.

New Horizon Church is a rapidly growing, non-denominational house of worship with a current congregation of more than 1,000 people. Featuring a modern worship experience with a heavy emphasis on visual media and music, the church offers two services each Sunday. After a temporary re-configuration of their existing sound system, church management liked what they heard and authorized Boone Audio—a design/build audio-visual firm with an emphasis on the church market—to proceed with the installation of an entirely new system.

Paul Boone, President and CEO of Boone Audio, explained the circumstances that led to the new SR system’s installation. “In November of 2006,” said Boone, “we were originally contacted about correcting some of the original sound system’s shortcomings. We explained that a line array could provide far more consistent coverage throughout their sanctuary and, as best we could, re-configured their existing loudspeakers to replicate a line array’s performance characteristics. The church was impressed with the improvement in sound quality and, after a sampling of what could be accomplished, elected to proceed with the installation of a proper line array system.”

New Horizon Church’s sanctuary is a wide, fan-shaped space that tapers toward the rear of the room. Maximum width is approximately 90 feet and the length of the room is 70 feet from the lip of the stage to the rear wall. The space has an open truss, blacked out ceiling that is 26 feet high and seating is modular in nature so as to facilitate various types of worship services. To provide even dispersion with plenty of low-end response, Boone installed a center cluster consisting of six WorxAudio Technologies TrueLine V8-PMD1 self-powered line array elements in conjunction with three subwoofers: two TL.218SS-PMD2 self-powered subs plus a single TL.118SS-PMD2 self-powered enclosure. Installation of the new system occurred in April 2007.

According to Boone, “The church was looking for a system that could deliver smooth, clean audio with wide, even dispersion.  Being that this room is fan-shaped, I felt that the TrueLine V8’s 140-degree horizontal dispersion would be a tremendous asset. Equally significant is the fact that the V8 can get very loud, yet it retains a distinct, clear sound with excellent vocal intelligibility. Considering that worship services routinely use a 5-piece praise band and two to three vocalists, I felt the WorxAudio V8 would make an ideal selection for the room.”

The six-element V8 line array cluster is suspended at the height of 22 feet in the front center of the sanctuary—just over the edge of the stage area. Rigging was accomplished with the aid of WorxAudio’s TrueAim™ grid, which incorporates a manual screw mechanism with a large, rotatable adjustment knob—enabling installers to easily level the system as each new loudspeaker element is added. Control of the upward/downward angle is accomplished by making clockwise/counterclockwise rotations of the knob. The TrueAim grid facilitates a visually clean, unobtrusive means of suspending the loudspeaker cluster—free from the visual distractions of chain and unsightly wires. The entire cluster is suspended with a single schedule #40 pipe.

On the floor—along the front edge of the stage are—Boone installed the three WorxAudio sub bass enclosures. The two TL.218SS-PMD2 self-powered subs (each with dual WorxAudio TL1801SS 18-inch transducers) are positioned at the left- and right-most extremities of the stage. The lone TL.118SS-PMD2 sub bass enclosure (with a single TL1801SS transducer) is positioned at the center of the stage perimeter.

The church’s new SR system, which was placed into service in May, has proven highly successful and popular with church officials. Greg Carr, New Horizon’s Worship Arts pastor offered the following assessment, “I am blown away with the uniformity of coverage and the balance of the full audio spectrum,” notes Carr. “There are no hot spots, dead zones, or unpleasant frequencies jutting out anywhere throughout the room. We’re constantly changing our stage setup using a variety of microphones and instruments, and yet the system consistently sounds great—without spending hours tweaking the settings. The WorxAudio system not only draws people into the worship experience, it also frees us to focus on ministry. It’s proven very popular with everyone.”
